Tacos are not just tasty food. They have a pretty neat history that is quite interesting. However, I am sure the history is not why so many love tacos. I did some research on Tacos and I am almost positive that is not the reason for the love of tacos I should say.
History of the TACO
Tacos are thought to come from Mexico, long before the Spanish arrived. Therefore, Mexican people used fresh corn tortillas and would fill them with fish, and cooked organs. Not only was this a meal for them, but it also gave them energy and vital nutrients.
Tacos were made differently. Therefore, they did not contain cheese, lettuce, or tomatoes. The tacos we eat today are actually less than 100 yrs old. This means the Taco as we know it, really has been reinvented in a sense. These tacos didn’t contain the cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and tomato that we associate with the meal today.
The invention of the “Taco”
Taco is not the original name. The word Taco is actually pretty new. It became known from Mexican silver miners back in the 18th century. They used to wrap up gunpowder like a taquito and insert it into rocks before they were denoted or blown up.
Furthermore, working-class people by the 18th-century came to enjoy this tasty food. Therefore, as a result of this being food for the miners and working class, it soon became a street food being called ” Tacos de minero” also called “Miner’s Tacos”.
However, these “Miner Tacos” did not come with a hard U-shape shell. What we call hard-shelled tacos. “Miner Tacos” came with a corn tortilla and it was filled with spicy fillings. Therefore, this became a filling meal for the workers. It was delicious and affordable for them as well. A hit for the daily staple for the working class.
1905 Tacos came to America
In 1905 is when this amazing daily food staple came to the United States. Those that came to work on railroads and other jobs brought their amazing food with them. One delicious food they brought was the beloved tacos.
Undeniably, tacos were a well-known delicious food brought to the United States in 1905. Therefore, tacos have been around for quite some time.
Furthermore, they are sure a huge hit and trending when it comes to foods in America today.
” The Chili Queens”
Los Angeles Ca is where the taco street food became the most popular. Therefore, not only were they cheap, and portable. They were delicious. Essentially a street food at this time due to the fact you could walk around as you ate them.
Therefore, making these delicious foods a finger food or highly portable food. In addition, Americans found a love for tacos through Mexican food Carts in Los Angeles, Ca. They were owned and operated by women. Women who were known as the “Chili Queens”.
The American Palate made The Change For Tacos
The “Chili Queens” sold delicious, amazing economic Mexican food. For example, soft corn tortillas tacos. However, this amazing economic Mexican food was unfamiliar to Americans who tried it. Therefore, they were not quite sure what this very spicy authentic food was.
Indeed, it was very different from American food. Specifically, due to the unique tremendously very spicy flavoring they had.
Therefore, the American palate was not familiar with such flavor. Therefore, the thought to change this absolutely, amazing, and the piquant meal came into play.
Shortly, the food brought to America by Mexican immigrants started a change. Therefore, by 1920 Mexican foods were blended with American ingredients.
Tacos a Mexican-American Blend
America began to merge the ingredients of Mexican food. Therefore, organs were replaced with ground beef or chicken.
Also, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes became the standard fillings for tacos. Therefore, now American cuisine was now blended and made for a more palatable taste.
Taco was now a blend of Mexican-American flavors. In addition, life was kicked up a notch when Taco Bell came about.
However, advertised as a Mexican restaurant with Mexican food. Taco Bell created a version of Mexican food. However, there was no real authenticity about any of it.
Taco the Word
Did you know that Taco was not even a word that Mexicans used to describe a taco? That is right! They used different words that varied by region and local culture to describe it.
As a matter of fact, “taco” was a word that Mexicans would use toward Americans to explain the dish.
With this in mind, the true word for “taco” to Mexican communities is “Taquito”.
Therefore, it is much like the Korean food chain Bon Chon calls “egg rolls” and “potstickers”.
Therefore, the real name is “Mandu”. Korean people call those dishes “Mandu”.
Taquerias not Taco Bell for Authentic Mexican Meals
Taco Bell is everywhere now. Therefore, just about every city has one in the United States. Even some countries.
However, if you want to experience more authentic unique Mexican food go to “mom and pop” type Mexican restaurants. Taquerias are trending in the United States more nowadays. They offer you real Mexican foods.
Therefore, you will not get a real Carnita, Tacos al Pastor, or even de Barbacoa at Taco Bell or your local Street Food Bus. Authentic meals at “Taquerias”.
Therefore, they are becoming more popular each day. In addition, don’t go for the Mexican-American blended meals anymore. It’s always best to have the real thing and not a Generic one!
The Real Mexican Taste of Mexico
All in all, now Mexican restaurants are turning away from Americanizing their foods. To clarify, they are bringing back the taste of real Mexico in their foods. In addition, we are loving it! Americans are loving Authentic Mexican Foods.
Therefore, next time you are dining out and have Mexican. Try out the unique amazing foods that are really authentic. In addition, instead of cheese, lettuce and ground beef. Instead, try authentic corn tortilla-filled flavored authentic meat.
